ChatGPT is a text-generating AI designed and developed by OpenAI. With its advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities, ChatGPT generates human-like responses to user queries and prompts, making it a powerful conversational tool.

The AI is pre-trained on diverse text data from a wide range of sources, including textbooks, websites, and articles, allowing it to respond to a wide range of topics and conversation starters.

ChatGPT’s training also involves learning the nuances of human conversation and generating responses that are natural and contextually relevant.

It’s not connected to the internet, but it was trained on such massive amounts of data that you can ask it almost anything and get a knowledgeable reply.

And that’s not all, ChatGPT can write essays, draft business plans, generate code, craft poems, make jokes, and create just about any text a human could. That makes it insanely useful for most professionals.

But, you need to know how to use ChatGPT prompts effectively to get a good result, and that means learning how to prompt the model correctly.

Prompting is such an important part of interacting with AI that it’s become an emerging field

Take, for example, this job posted to indeed.com in 2023.

The job description list duties like “Design and develop AI prompts using large language models (e.g., GPT-3, ChatGPT)” and “Assist other team members in generating AI prompts for their specific needs”

Take a look at our article detailing how prompt engineering will take over most text-based fields in the near future.

But to use ChatGPT prompts effectively, or any other language model, is a learnable skill. These tips can be applied to most language models, not only ChatGPT.

In this course, we’re going to explore what it takes to engineer effective Chat GPT prompts to create any piece of text imaginable.

Learn to Use ChatGPT Effectively

Prompt engineering is a powerful concept within natural language processing. This means coming up with the correct phrase to get ChatGPT to generate the text you want.

For example, if you wanted to learn to code, you could write a basic Chat GPT prompt:

teach me to write code, chat gpt prompt
PROMPT
teach me how to write code

As you can see, the output from ChatGPT is not very useful. It simply says to “practice, practice, practice,” and instructs me on the steps I could take toward learning coding, but it doesn’t actually teach me how to code.

To get a more tailored and comprehensive course, we would need to engineer the Chat GPT prompt differently:

PROMPT
Create a detailed step by step lesson plan, by the end of the course i should have a basic understanding of python and the different applications for it, as well as actionable exercises i can complete that will teach me hands on how to code using python

This prompt delivers a well-structured course schedule and actionable activities to help learners reach their goals quickly. It includes clear and specific terminology.
‏‏‎ ‎

To get a better output, I broke the prompt down and asked myself three questions:
‏‏‎ ‎

  • What did I want to create?
“Create a detailed step-by-step lesson plan”
    ‏‏‎ ‎
  • What did I want to learn?
“by the end of the course, I should have a basic understanding of python and the different applications for it”
    ‏‏‎ ‎
  • How could I get an effective output for my learning style?
“as well as actionable exercises i can complete that will teach me hands-on how to code using python”
    ‏‏‎ ‎

By slightly rewording my prompt and being more specific, I was able to generate a course that I’d otherwise have to pay for.

Start with a Command

To get your desired output from ChatGPT, start with acommand word; this is the very first word and the one that the AI model gives the most importance to.

These commands include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Write
  • Define
  • Summarize
  • Code
  • Explain
  • Search
  • Brainstorm
  • List
  • Analyze
  • Impersonate
  • Create

This list of Chat GPT prompts can be used to generate almost any text, learn any skill, or brainstorm any new idea.

With the right words, you can create an engaging and informative piece of writing, acquire new knowledge, or develop a creative concept. To get the most out of this list, consider the words you choose and the order in which you use them.

Experiment with different phrases and compare the results, refining your prompt until you get what you‘re looking for.

For example, you may get different results using “Rephrase” versus “Rewrite” versus “Recompose.

Write, Proofread, Rewrite, Brainstorm

This command set is obvious, but also the most useful for a wide range of professions. As a writer, I use it daily to edit my work and come up with new ideas.

Here are some ways ChatGPT can help with your writing, it can:

  • Write an entire article from scratch.
  • Write a rough draft
  • Write an article from a bullet point outline
  • Proofread and edit a rough draft
  • Proofread a draft and give you detailed grammatical/readability feedback (just like Grammarly, which costs upwards of $30 a month)
  • Rewrite articles until they’d pass an original content check
  • Write social media captions, come up with post plans, and search for stock images.

How to use the “Write” Prompt

If you want to get the most out of the “write” Chat GPT prompt, it’s important to provide context. Just like when you’d ask a human to generate a text, you need to be precise.

To illustrate, I asked Chat-GPT to “write a website landing page for a pet food company”.

chat gpt landing page text for a pet company
PROMPT
write the landing page text for a petfood company

My result was a vague wall of text.

When you write a Chat GPT prompt, approach it like you would approach a human, by giving context and explaining what you’re looking for.

If you don’t know what a human would ask for, find a briefing for that particular text. Here’s a list to get you started:

Anatomy of a Prompt

To get a good result, you need to break the prompt down. This what we call the anatomy of a Chat GPT prompt.

‏‏‏‏‎ ‎To improve the website copy, here’s what I asked myself:

  1. Who is this prompt for?
We are targeting health-conscious 20-35-year-olds, primarily women, who are pet owners.

‏‏‎ ‎

  • What are you trying to create?
We want to create a well-formatted, easy-to-copy-and-paste website landing page text for specific sections including a product description, customer review section, etc.

‏‏‎ ‎

  • Where do you want the AI to draw information from?
We are selling in the US, specifically in Los Angeles, so we want the AI to draw resources from the LA area and to create posts relevant to that area.

‏‏‎ ‎

  • How would you like the information presented?
We would like the text to be well-formatted, so that we can have an easy overview and can easily copy and paste the text. This could be in the form of a table, list, paragraph, etc.

‏‏‎ ‎

  • What would you like to avoid in the text?
We know Chat-GPT can get repetitive and has a specific ‘explanatory’ style, I want it to be written like a copywriter and for the text to be varied.

    ‏‏‎ ‎‎‏‏‎ ‎

  • How long should the text be?
They should be industry standard lengths, and digestible for a landing page.
    ‏‏‎ ‎
    ‏‏‎ ‎‎‏‏‎ ‎

With this in mind, I restructured the prompt:

chat-gpt website copy text generating ai
PROMPT
write a landing page for a website for my petfood company called "Healthy Petfood Company", we sell healthy petfood enriched with vitamins to fight off age and food related diseases in dogs, our ideal target customer is 20-35 health conscious pet owners. ensure that the length of each website section is the ideal length for the industry standard of website text length and readability, make sure the length of each text is varied, write in the style of a professional copywriter, and include text for everything i describe to you: format the text in a table with the 5 following rows: hero section title and subheader (no more than 30 words total), images of the food with a product description and buy button linking to the checkout page, section with an image of happy healthy pets and text describing the health benefits, an email signup form, customer review form

Summarize Long Articles with Chat-GPT

Have you ever wanted to learn a new skill or ace an exam quickly? Chat GPT prompts can help you do just that! By utilizing text generating AI, humans are able to learn new skills at an incredibly fast rate.

If you need to sift through a large amount of material to study or write a blog post, Chat GPT can help summarize the key points with a simple prompt.

There are dozens of paid services that summarize large batches of text like this one that costs nearly $100 per year. But GPT does it for free.

And because Chat GPT is a conversational model, if you don’t understand an aspect of the text or need to hear a different example or reasoning then you can simply ask Chat GPT to clarify.

To do this, copy and paste the article into the chat field and structure a Chat GPT prompt to get the info you need.

Our favorite phrases for summarizing information using Chat GPT include:
‏‏‎ ‎

  • Explain it like I’m 5, 10, or 15 (depending on the complexity you’re looking for)
  • Summarize the text in simple terms
  • Explain [specific element] of the text
  • Create an actionable course [based on the text]
  • Clarify [specific element] of the text using a simple example
    ‏‏‎ ‎
    ‏‏‎ ‎

When I was teaching myself Python, I had difficulty understanding integers. I wanted to know what part they played in an application so I asked google a specific question: “What part do integers play in python code?”

The answer was less than helpful.

To get a better understanding, I pasted a lesson from Google into a ChatGPT conversation with a specific prompt. My goal was to create a ChatGPT prompt instructing the model to use a real-world application to explain how integers factor into the function.

PROMPT
Explain integers in python using a simple real-world example of how this concept would be used in a simple real-world application (name a specific application and the role integers play in the function of that application) based on the following article:

This output was so much more helpful than google. It allowed me to understand the role integers play in python applications using a real world example. This is the kind of explanation you might get from a tutor or teacher when approaching difficult subjects.

Invoke a Style

If youre looking for something specific, create a Chat GPT prompt instructing the model to write in a particular style.

This technique can be faster and more effective than providing context, allowing you to get the results you want in fewer words.

This approach is also incredibly versatile; here are a few examples of how we like to use the [in the style of] prompt.

PROMPT
Write an explanation for quantum computing in the style of a roald dahl storybook, it should explain the concept in extremely simple language a child could understand, the story should be fantastical and invoke the imagination
PROMPT
Imagine a character profile in the style of george rr martin. Be extremely creative
PROMPT
Write a social media post for my pet food company in the style of a direct response copywriter
PROMPT
Write a script for a video about the brand new apple washing machine in the style of marques brownlee

Using Pre-Prompts

Chat-GPT is a conversational model, allowing users to have full conversations and receive relevant answers throughout the entire thread. To make the most of this, we like to use Pre-Prompts to turn Chat GPT into a ‘character’. This can be extremely useful in certain scenarios.

For example, if you’re selling car insurance and are feeling a little nervous about cold calling a new demographic of customers, you can create a Chat GPT prompt with a particular customer profile and ask it to only respond with potential objections. This is an excellent way to practice for a real-life sales call.

I tested this out, and it worked even better than expected.

Conversation with Chatgpt
PROMPT
I will give you a profile and you will assume that identity for the remainder of the conversation. I will attempt to sell you a home security system and your task is to only respond to each of my sales attempts with an objection, do you understand? [PASTE PROFILE]

This prompt can also be used to memorize lines for a play. I tried it with Romeo and Juliet, and because Chat-GPT already knew the popular script, I didn’t have to paste it in.

However, if your play isn’t as well known, just paste the script after the prompt and Chat-GPT will help you memorize your lines.

Conversation with Chatgpt
PROMPT
Here is the first scene of the play romeo and juliet. You will now read through the first scene of the script with me line by line, I will be gregory and you will be sampson. If i get a line incorrect, you are to tell me i got the line incorrect, if i get it right then respond with the next line. [PASTE SCENE]
