What are Seamless Tiles?

Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and similar text-to-image AI generators are developing at a rapid pace. Each week brings new updates, more data set training, and major leaps in development. The latest update from Midjourney may be the most impressive yet, with what could be one of the first real use cases for the AI text-to-image generator; seamless tiles. Seamless tiles are designs that can be seamlessly stitched together into an endless pattern. They are commonly used as a graphic design element in app and website backgrounds, as well as textile design, print-on-demand, game texturing, and much more.

The new feature is generating images like this:

When stitched together, these images form endless patterns:

‎ Before Midjourney, seamless tiles were easy to find for free or for small royalties on stock photo sites. However, with the customizability, originality, and free copyright offered by AI, Midjourney may become the internet’s new source for seamless patterns. In only the past couple of months, text-to-image AI has evolved from the pixellated uncanny valley to high-quality photorealism. After the recent update, many are already finding creative ways to monetize this new feature, capitalizing on the low competition and brand-new tech. You can now find artists selling AI-generated seamless pattern bundles, print-on-demand stores offering AI designs, and all kinds of professionals using the tech to increase the quality and volume of their work.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Input your prompt as usual. Don’t know how? Follow our prompting basics guide. Step 2: Add the parameter [–tile] to create a seamless tile.

‎ Step 4: The sky is the limit. Create seamless game textures, a new design for your print-on-demand store, or a background for a website, banner, or marketing material. Midjourney can now produce some astonishing results.
