Artificial Intelligence Won’t Steal Our Jobs, It’ll Change Them

With AI’s capability to complete generalized tasks with better-than-human efficiency and accuracy, many are rightly concerned about future job security.

GPT-3 has captured the world’s attention. Unparalleled by any past technology, it’s rapid development has happened sooner than anyone anticipated.

With AI’s capability to complete generalized tasks at better-than-human efficiency, many are rightly concerned about future job security.

Digital artists are currently in the media limelight as striking images produced by Midjourney and DALL.E continue to flood the internet. But most other digital/creative jobs are also endangered by GPT-3. So, what will photographers, digital artists, web designers, and other digital professionals do when AI can produce perfect images, graphics, websites, and apps?

These careers will bottleneck into one; the prompt engineer.

Machines may be able to create things fast, but not without our instructions. Humans are still valuable parts of the equation. That is why those who learn how to prompt will have a huge head start on the job market in the (very) near future.

Careers of the Future

Prompt engineering is a concept in natural language processing that involves formulating inputs in order to get the most desirable results.

This way of ‘prompting’ language models is not a unique process. In fact, if you’ve been on the internet for any considerable amount of time, you’re probably already a near-pro prompting engineer.

Googling is a great example of everyday prompting.

We formulate our searches as questions, add ‘Reddit’ at the end to get real people’s stories and refine our wording until we find the answer we’re looking for. Google ‘prompts’ may not be grammatically correct or fit well into conversation, it is crafted only for the machine in order to get a desirable output.

This is the foundation of prompt engineering.

Becoming a Prompt Engineer

In relation to machine learning, prompt engineering refers to the act of creating and refining a text input in order to get the most useful result.

Prompts can be very short or very long depending on your desired result:

Because prompting concepts, techniques, and ideas are still evolving, few learning materials are currently available.

Most resources are community-backed, and can be found on Reddit, Discord, Facebook, and here on Promptlib.

Follow our Prompt Engineering Basics course to get caught up on the base concepts of prompting.

Self-Taught Prompt Engineers

Prompt engineering is a learnable skill.

But most models are still in beta phases and experiencing constant updates that heavily affect outputs, so it takes persistence. Through trial and error, we can map out the model’s capabilities and limitations and become familiar with the different language models and how to craft model-specific prompts.

Some AI artists report spending hours sorting through hundreds of generations before finding the right one.

These generations were all made with the exact same prompt.

Analyze the Datasets

AI companies are usually secretive about their data sets. Open AI behind DALL.E 2 refuses to release the majority of its data to the public.

Fortunately, Stable Diffusion has been more transparent, therefore it is possible to check some of the data sets yourself.

By searching similar keywords you can adjust your prompts to the learned data to make higher-quality outputs.

This is a dataset of over 12 million of the billions of images used to train Stable Diffusion.

Same World, Different Jobs

As we move into the age of artificial intelligence, artists will need to be proficient in prompting AI.

Just like any engineer needs the ability to structure and test reproducible results; or any historian needs to be able to connect Picasso’s influences with what was happening in the world during his paintings of war and beauty, “prompt engineer” will be an artistic career of the new age, requiring a perfect balance of scientific and artistic genius.

Keep Up with Prompting as a Professional

As AI develops, prompting will become more complex and harder to learn. Keeping up with new developments, updates, and prompting features will keep you ahead of the curve whether you’re an artist, graphic designer, business owner, web designer, or hobbyist.
